Additions

The decision to renovate or add an addition is a daunting one. A lot of thought and discussion must go in to making the right choice. The most common dilemma our customers face is “should we stay in this house and try and make our wish-list into a reality, or should we move and try and find a home that better suits our needs?” T.V shows often make this sound like a viable option, however not everyone in this situation may be willing or able to relocate. This is when a renovation may help make your wish-list into a reality.

We like to remind our customers that “changes on paper are easier and cheaper than in wood”. Planning is everything. If a renovation has a estimated duration of 6 months it is not unreasonable that the planning phase should take as long if not longer.

Here are some things to keep in mind when planning a minor/major renovation project;

1) First and foremost determine your budget. Then create a list of your “needs” versus your “wants”, this will help you prioritize your renovation expectations while keeping your budget in mind.

2) Contact an architect or designer. Now that you have narrowed down your wish-list it will be easier for the architect or designer to create a plan on paper for you to start revising.

3) Shop around! It is always beneficial to have multiple estimates on your project, however, be sure that all contractors are bidding on the same drawings and scope of work.

4) Create a realistic timeline for your project, this may include temporary relocation from your home depending on your project scope. If you are uncertain, talk to your contractor to discuss how disruptive the project may become to your day-to-day lives.

5) Stay focused and keep a positive attitude. Remember a renovation is a temporary situation in order to obtain your dream house. Eventually the dust will settle and the tools will be gone leaving you at home with your new and improved surroundings.
